My Neighbour Totoro explores the beauty and magic of 1950s rural Japan through the eyes of two young girls. Satsuki and her little sister Mei move to the country and discover the spirits of the forest, seeing the magical power of nature with wondering innocence. The atmosphere of gentle fantasy was partly inspired by Japanese storyteller Kenji Miyazawa. Equally impressive are the affectionate characterisations of the children and the warm depiction of day-to-day family life. The cuddly Totoro are now an icon of Japanese pop-culture.
