An orchestra ventures out of the ivory tower of high culture
into the Berlin inner city streets to work with young people
who have never danced before and are strangers to classical
music. 250 participants aged 8-18, from all social classes
and ethnic backgrounds, gained confidence and strength during
rehearsal and performance of Stravinsky's The Rite of
Spring. With choreographer Royston Maldoom and project
director Sir Simon Rattle, they discover that music is ”not
a luxury but a need, like the air we breathe and the water
we drink” (Rattle).
