A magical, live-action Russian adaptation of Hans Christian
Andersen's immortal fairytale. Shown by the BBC in the 1960s
as part of their Tales From Europe series, The
Snow Queen is much remembered but rarely seen. It tells
the story of young Gerda and her search for her brother,
Kay, who has been abducted by the mysterious Snow Queen.
With the release of The Chronicles of Narnia later
in the year, there could be no better time to re-examine
the story that inspired C.S.Lewis.
USSR 1966 Dir. Gennadi Kazansky 80 min.

Tales From Europe
These magical adaptations of The Snow Queen and
The Tinderbox were
first seen in the UK in the 1960s - on BBC1 at 5.25pm on
Thursday evenings, straight after Blue Peter -
as part of a long-running series called Tales From Europe.
Although the special effects are not as sophisticated as
those of today, the films are full of images, characters
and adventures guaranteed to lodge in your memory.
