Not many films promise you a dancing plastic bag, a ‘living’
statue of Queen Victoria and a corps de ballet of Brussels
sprouts. These are just a few of the treats in Christine
Edzard’s delightful, but very rarely seen film. A
truly imaginative interpretation of three of Andersen’s
tales – The Flying Trunk, The Little
Match Girl and Little Ida – the film
creates its own strange, charmed world where anything and
everything seems possible. Perhaps the highlight is the
final ballet (choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton) featuring
animated vegetables as well as members of the Royal Ballet
dressed as cauliflowers, leeks and an unscrubbed potato.
The screening takes place at Sands Studios – where
Stories From a Flying Trunk was shot over 26 years
ago. Director Christine Edzard will be on hand to discuss
how the film was made. There will also be an opportunity
to tour the studio and other local locations; to explore
Sands’ world famous costume-making workshops (recent
projects include Pride and Prejudice and Oliver
Twist); and to see the original costumes used for the
vegetable ballet.
NB Tickets for these events are strictly limited. Early
booking is strongly recommended.
