PREVIOUSLYThis is the roof of the Byõdõ-in temple in Uji near Kyoto. It's around a thousand years old, and has escaped fire when all the buildings around it have burned down. Imaginary animals were often placed on roofs to encourage rain and ward of fire. Unfortunately they were mostly made of metal and attracted lighting. |
